1) - It wuz the GPU

At the recent meeting, I told how the response of movements of objects
on the screen had become jerky - after I had replaced the motherboard
and had replaced Linux Mint 13 with Mint 18.2 (rule from previous job -
never adopt the newest version, wait for someone else to find and fix
the inevitable bugs) and re-installed BOINC (Berkeley Open
Infrastructure for Network Computing) to run SETI (search for
extra-terrestrial intelligence) and Rosetta (protein molecule folding).
Simply changing the options to disable computations while the computer
was "in use" made the problem go away.

2) Fortran lives (and even may be useful for finding a job):

I guess I really am getting old - I was using it in 1962 on an IBM 1620.
There's a lot of Fortran code still out there and in use, it has to be
'maintained' and even extended.
