Wow, just rolling in the dough.
Mudita! :-D

Got to mention that while most commodity hardware does work reasonably
well, it really saves a lot of hassle when have hardware that is
completely compatible.

So I'd recommend an RYF (respects your freedom) laptop,
as you can afford it.

Especially with the new intel chips which have a secondary "mystery
processor" which is likely used for tracking and who knows what else.
It has been noted that it may be used as a trojan horse exploit,
quite possibly by intel or the NSA or whomever.
Anyone that gets that private key...
which is just a few hacks away.
whooplah spambot army,
or maybe ransom bait?

to quote RYF
"The desire to own a computer or device and have full control over it,
to know that you are not being spied on or tracked, to run any
software you wish without asking permission, and to share with friends
without worrying about Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) —these
are the desires of millions of people who care about the future of
technology and our society.
Unfortunately, hardware manufacturers have until now relied on close
cooperation with proprietary software companies that demanded control
over their users. As citizens and their customers, we need to promote
our desires for a new class of hardware — hardware that anyone can
support because it respects your freedom."

You could get a fully stocked X200 or T400 for half your budget.

Coincidentally you can get a mini 3D printer for the whole budget.

For better or for worse, I've never been much influenced by the
bandwagon-effect cognitive bias. If the evidence is against it, then I
avoid it. I've only heard/read/seen bad things about that which is
proprietary.

When considering Apple/Microsoft or other things proprietary for
personal use.
My stomach just knots up, and a very unpleasant desire to hurl develops,
probably because proprietary things just taste like poison to my mind.
Expensive, brittle, sterile software and hardware,
like eating chalk, as it scratches the board.

(my parents were very liberal with letting me put things in my mouth
as a child, so I think I ate some chalk at some point and had a bad
reaction, now I have bad associations with anything chalk related).
I prefer not to get chalk on my hands, it's very irritating,
and I usually have to run to wash them of it ASAP.

Biological nature is open-source libreware by it's very nature, those
things which were proprietary (disallowed copying of source code
RNA/DNA) did not reproduce and so are all gone. All things proprietary
in the long term are thus doomed to failure.

I of course admire and respect those of you capable of handling those
proprietary things. I understand it is sometimes necessary for job
purposes.

May you be clean, healthy and safe.

Thanks,
